Recently, a media delegation from several African countries visited Kumbum Monastery in Qinghai, exploring the cultural heritage of the monastery complex, which has a history of more than 600 years.
Founded in 1379, Kumbum Monastery is the birthplace of Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug tradition.
Gladys Wanjiku Mungai, a journalist with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, said she was particularly impressed that themonks there recite large volumes of Buddhist scriptures every day and that the bodhi flowers blooming in the courtyard are regarded by local people as symbols of good fortune.
