Chagyab County in Chamdo City, SW China’s Xizang Autonomous Region, is home to people of various ethnic groups, including Tibetan, Han, Hui and Naxi communities. For generations, people of different ethnic groups have lived side by side and shared their daily lives. Through everyday interactions, they have fostered mutual understanding and harmony and built deep bonds of friendship.

Enjoying tea and chatting is a time-honored custom passed down from generation to generation in Xizang. It also provides a unique way for neighbors to communicate and build closer bonds. Drawing on this local cultural tradition, Gyitang Community has carefully established a Harmony Teahouse as a day-care center, turning the small teahouse into a welcoming community hub that promotes ethnic solidarity. 

Gyitang Community also works with local businesses that support community initiatives to regularly organize themed study activities on ethnic unity and progress. Here, members of the community’s Party and community committees study the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law. The community also offers a public-interest class every Thursday, bringing together residents from different ethnic groups to learn the standard spoken and written Chinese language.
