In Norbulingka, Tibetan Opera Resounds as Cultural Products Draw Crowds

2026-08-18  | China Tibet Online

August 13 marked the second day of the Shoton Festival. Inside Norbulingka, the powerful singing of Tibetan opera rang out as visitors and local residents raised their phones to capture the scene, part of a cultural tradition that has continued for more than 300 years. Today, the Shoton Festival is no longer merely a local celebration; it has also become a window through which people from outside Xizang can gain a glimpse of the region.

On the lawn beside the Tibetan opera stage, local residents spread out mats and sipped sweet tea, carrying on the traditional practice of spending time in the park. Just a few steps away, crowds gathered around cultural and creative product stalls, while young people showed their confidence in local culture through their purchases. Strolling through the market with a cup of yogurt in hand and picking up barley products and handmade yak-wool crafts along the way, visitors showed their appreciation and affection for the plateau’s local specialties.

The appeal of the Shoton Festival goes beyond the sweet-and-tangy taste of yogurt and the resounding melodies of Tibetan opera. More importantly, it shows that an ancient festival can still bring an entire city together, draw the world’s attention and allow culture to flow naturally through laughter and celebration.
