Thousand-Year-Old Salt Pans by the Lancang River

2026-10-08  | China Tibet Online

Naxi Ethnic Township in Markam County, Chamdo, Xizang, sits along the banks of the Lancang River. Local salt production dates back to the Tang Dynasty and has continued for over 1,300 years.

Built along the mountainside, the salt pans have wooden-pillar frames and packed-earth surfaces. Villagers draw brine from ancient salt wells and pour it into the pans, where it is left to evaporate in the sun and dry in the wind until salt crystals form.

In 2008, the sun-drying well salt technique was inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This cultural heritage has also become the foundation for local tourism development. Visitors from across the country flock to the area, bringing new opportunities to local residents. The village now offers a variety of farm-stay restaurants and homestays, while the salt has been turned into a range of creative cultural products that visitors can take home.
